About Matchbox Twenty
Biography / Discography
Matchbox Twenty (formerly stylized as Matchbox 20, also known as mb20) is an American rock band formed in Orlando, Florida, in 1995 by Rob Thomas, Brian Yale, Paul Doucette, and Kyle Cook. The group blends post-grunge and arena rock with pop sensibilities, and has become one of the defining bands of the late 1990s and 2000s rock landscape.
The band achieved massive international success with their 1996 debut album Yourself or Someone Like You, which was certified 12× platinum in the United States and multi-platinum across Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Key singles from the album, including Push, 3 A.M., Real World, and Back 2 Good, became staples of rock radio. Their second album Mad Season (2000) peaked in the Billboard 200 top three and earned 4× platinum certification, driven by the hit single Bent, which reached number one on the Hot 100. A third studio album, More Than You Think You Are (2002), continued their commercial and radio success with tracks Disease, Unwell, and Bright Lights. Lead vocalist Rob Thomas also gained Grammy recognition as a songwriter and performer on Carlos Santana’s comeback single Smooth, winning three Grammys for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Popular Music Collaboration.
