About Thelma Houston
Biography / Discography
Thelma Houston (born May 7, 1946, in Leland, Mississippi) is an American soul and R&B singer. She began her recording career in the late 1960s with Dunhill Records before joining Motown Records in 1971. Her greatest commercial success came with her 1977 recording of “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” a cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ composition that reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. The track earned Houston a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and became an international hit, particularly strong in the UK and across European markets.
Released from her third album Any Way You Like It (1976), “Don’t Leave Me This Way” became Houston’s signature song and the centerpiece of her career as a soul and disco artist. Though subsequent releases did not achieve comparable chart performance, Houston maintained active work in recording and live performance throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She also pursued an acting career, appearing in television programs and films including the 1975 film Death Scream and various television guest appearances. In the late 1970s, she recorded collaboratively with Jerry Butler on the albums Thelma & Jerry (1977) and Two to One (1978). Houston returned to recording in 2007 with A Woman’s Touch, featuring covers that honored male artists who had influenced her. Her original recording of “Don’t Leave Me This Way” endures as a disco standard and is regularly featured in retrospectives and award broadcasts.
