About Vicky Leandros
Biography / Discography
Vicky Leandros, born Vasiliki Papathanasiou on 23 August 1949 in Corfu, Greece, is a pop and schlager vocalist who achieved worldwide recognition through the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1967, representing Luxembourg, she placed fourth with “L’amour est bleu”, which became a major international hit. Five years later, she won the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest with “Après toi”, a single that sold over six million copies and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart.
Following her Eurovision success, Leandros built a prolific international career spanning the 1970s and beyond. Key releases included “When Bouzoukis Played” (1973), which reached number 44 on the UK chart, and “Theo, wir fahr’n nach Lodz” (1974), which topped the German charts. In the 1980s, she achieved further success with “A l’Est d’Eden” (1984, reaching number two in France) and continued recording albums across rock, soul, pop, and traditional genres. Recording in eight languages, she built dedicated audiences in Japan, Canada, South Africa, and throughout Europe.
Based in Germany since moving there at age nine, Leandros earned numerous gold and platinum records across multiple territories and received prestigious awards including the Bronze Rose of Montreux and multiple Goldene Europa accolades. After more than six decades in the music industry, she retired from touring in 2024.
