About Al Di Meola
Biography / Discography
Albert Laurence Di Meola is an American guitarist whose technical virtuosity and innovative approach to composition have shaped modern jazz fusion and world music. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1954, Di Meola achieved international prominence as the guitarist for Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, one of the pioneering ensembles of the 1970s jazz fusion movement. His career encompasses both the high-voltage fusion sound of his group work and a sustained solo recording output exploring flamenco, Latin rhythms, and classical influences.
Di Meola joined Return to Forever in 1974 at age nineteen, recording three studio albums with the ensemble that all charted in the Billboard pop top 40. The album No Mystery earned a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance by a Group. Following the band’s 1976 dissolution, Di Meola launched a solo career that produced the landmark albums Land of the Midnight Sun (1976), Elegant Gypsy (1977), and Casino (1978). His 1980 collaboration with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía, Friday Night in San Francisco, became one of the best-selling instrumental albums of all time, with seven million copies sold worldwide.
A Grammy-winning artist and Berklee College of Music alumnus, Di Meola has collaborated with major figures including Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Steve Winwood, Paul Simon, and Jean-Luc Ponty. From 1976 to 1978, he performed with Stomu Yamashta in the supergroup Go. His explorations of flamenco, Brazilian music, and Mediterranean traditions expanded the vocabulary of contemporary guitar music. Di Meola is available for festival appearances, corporate events, and private performances.
