About Cheap Trick
Biography / Discography
Cheap Trick is an American rock band formed in Rockford, Illinois, in 1973 by guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson, with drummer Bun E. Carlos and originally lead vocalist Randy Hogan. The classic lineup solidified when Robin Zander joined as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist in fall 1974, a configuration that has remained the core of the band through 2026. Their work bridged elements of 1960s guitar pop, 1970s hard rock, and emerging punk rock, establishing the template for subsequent power pop artists.
The band achieved international breakthrough via their 1979 live album Cheap Trick at Budokan, recorded during their first Japan tour, which went triple platinum in the US and featured the hit single “I Want You to Want Me”. Dream Police (1979) became their most commercially successful studio album, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Key hits include “Surrender” (1978), “Voices” (1979), “She’s Tight” (1982), and “Tonight It’s You” (1985). After declining commercial fortunes in the early 1980s, the band achieved major resurgence in 1988 with Lap of Luxury, topping the US charts with the power ballad “The Flame” and scoring further hits with “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Ghost Town”.
Cheap Trick has continued releasing new studio albums into the 2020s while maintaining an active touring schedule. The band has performed live more than 5,000 times since formation and sold more than 20 million albums globally. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
