About De-Phazz
Biography / Discography
De-Phazz is a German downtempo and jazz ensemble founded in 1997 in Heidelberg. The group merges contemporary turntablism and electronic production with Latin, soul, trip hop, and drum and bass influences, creating a distinctive lounge-oriented sound that distinguishes it from traditional jazz ensembles. Creative director Pit Baumgartner has shaped the group’s evolution, deliberately refreshing the ensemble’s composition for each new album release, working consistently with contributors including Barbara Lahr, Karl Frierson, and Pat Appleton.
The group was founded and named by Haluk Soyoğlu, who alongside Baumgartner established Phazz-a-delic New Format Recordings as an experimental independent label. De-Phazz’s catalog spans from their debut through multiple studio albums and live recordings, with releases through labels including Mole Listening Pearls, Universal Jazz Germany, Edel Records, and United Recordings. Notable albums include Detuned Gravity, Godsdog, Jelly Banquet, and Luck You!, showcasing their evolving approach to production and arrangement. Beyond original compositions, the ensemble regularly produces remixed versions of existing tracks, expanding their experimental aesthetic.
