About Lou Bega
Biography / Discography
Lou Bega, born David Lubega Balemezi on 13 April 1975 in Munich, Germany, is a German singer and performer of Ugandan-Italian descent. Known professionally as Lou Bega, he achieved international recognition for his 1999 debut single “Mambo No. 5,” a reinterpretation of Pérez Prado’s 1949 instrumental classic that added contemporary lyrics to the original composition. Bega’s signature musical style fuses the orchestral Latin sounds and rhythms of the 1940s and 1950s with modern dance and pop beats, creating a distinctive approach to mambo and Latin pop.
Bega began his musical career as a hip-hop artist and rapper before discovering Latin music influences. His 1999 single “Mambo No. 5” became a global hit, reaching number one across much of Europe including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, and climbing to number three in the United States. In France, the track spent twenty weeks at number one. His debut album A Little Bit of Mambo (19 July 1999) peaked at number three in Germany and the U.S., while reaching number one in Austria, Canada, Finland, Hungary, and Switzerland. The album produced additional successful singles including “I Got a Girl,” which charted in the European top 10.
Bega released subsequent studio albums including Ladies and Gentlemen (2001), compilations King of Mambo (2002) and The Best of Lou Bega (2004), Lounatic (2005), and Free Again (2010), along with various other recordings. While his subsequent releases did not replicate the commercial success of his debut period, Bega has continued to record and perform internationally.
