Pankaj Keshubhai Udhas (17 May 1951 – 26 February 2024) was an Indian solo ghazal and playback singer recognized for bringing classical ghazal traditions to modern Hindi cinema. Born in Jetpur, Navagadh, Gujarat, Udhas specialized in compositions about love, intoxication, and romance, establishing himself as one of India’s foremost ghazal vocalists across seven decades of performance.
Udhas released his debut album, Aahat, in 1980, followed by a series of celebrated albums including Mukarar (1981), Tarrannum (1982), Mehfil (1983), Nayaab (1985), and Aafreen (1986). His breakthrough in cinema came with ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’ from the 1986 film Naam, a performance that transformed his career and later was selected by BBC Radio as one of the 100 songs of the millennium. The song’s impact elevated his profile to international audiences and cemented his legacy in Hindi film music.
Throughout his career, Udhas collaborated with prominent artists including Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, and Sadhana Sargam, while performing at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall (1984). He received India’s Padma Shri in 2006 and was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2025, India’s second-highest civilian honor. His later albums, including In Search of Meer (2003) and Hasrat (2005), continued to document his refined interpretation of traditional and contemporary ghazal repertoire.
