About Roxette
Biography / Discography
Roxette is a Swedish pop rock duo formed in 1986 by Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, both established musicians in Sweden prior to their collaboration. Following their initial success with ‘Neverending Love’, the band achieved international prominence with their 1988 album Look Sharp!, which produced two US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: ‘The Look’ and ‘Listen to Your Heart’. The romantic ballad ‘It Must Have Been Love’ (1990) became a cultural phenomenon through its inclusion on the Pretty Woman soundtrack.
The band’s 1991 album Joyride became their bestseller with 11 million copies sold worldwide and spawned the US number-one single of the same name. During the Join the Joyride! Tour, Roxette performed for over 1.5 million fans. Subsequent releases—Tourism (1992), Crash! Boom! Bang! (1994), and the greatest hits compilation Don’t Bore Us, Get to the Chorus! (1995)—each achieved multi-platinum status globally. Have a Nice Day (1999) and Room Service (2001) received gold and platinum certifications across Europe and Latin America.
Following Fredriksson’s 2002 brain tumor diagnosis, the band entered a hiatus during which members pursued solo projects. Roxette reformed in 2009 for an extensive world tour extending to 2016, releasing Charm School (2011), Travelling (2012), and Good Karma (2016) during this period. Marie Fredriksson retired from touring in 2016 due to declining health and died in December 2019. Per Gessle has continued musical activity under the name PG Roxette since 2021, and in 2024 announced a Roxette tour with vocalist Lena Philipsson.
Roxette stands as Sweden’s second-best-selling musical act after ABBA, with 75–80 million records sold worldwide. The band achieved particular recognition in Germany with nearly six million certified units and in the United States with four Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles and over three million RIAA certifications.
