About Runrig
Biography / Discography
Runrig were a Scottish Celtic rock band formed on the Isle of Skye in 1973 by brothers Rory MacDonald (bass, vocals) and Calum MacDonald (percussion). Throughout their 45-year career, the band became one of Scotland’s most celebrated acts, blending folk and rock with Gaelic language lyrics centered on Scottish history, culture, and politics. The classic lineup of the 1980s and 1990s also featured lead vocalist Donnie Munro, guitarist Malcolm Jones, drummer Iain Bayne, and keyboardist Pete Wishart.
Runrig achieved their greatest commercial success during the 1980s and 1990s, with Billboard describing them as one of the “most celebrated” Gaelic language bands in Scotland. Their 1995 single “An Ubhal as Àirde (The Highest Apple)” made history as the first song sung in Scottish Gaelic to chart on the UK Singles Chart. The band’s signature song “Loch Lomond” became iconic, and their 2007 re-release “Loch Lomond (Hampden Remix)” reached number nine in the UK charts and earned Silver certification from the BPI. Runrig released fourteen studio albums between 1978 and 2016, including Play Gaelic (1978), The Highland Connection (1979), Heartland (1985), and The Story (2016).
Following Donnie Munro’s departure in 1997 to pursue politics, Bruce Guthro became lead vocalist from 1998 onwards, helping the band reach new audiences in Canada and the United States. The band staged major outdoor summer concerts at Scottish landmarks including Loch Lomond (1991, attracting 50,000 attendees), Stirling Castle, Edinburgh Castle, and Scone Palace. After announcing their retirement in 2017, Runrig performed their final farewell tour The Last Dance in August 2018 at Stirling City Park, attracting an estimated 52,000 fans across two days.
