About The Rasmus
Biography / Discography
The Rasmus is a Finnish rock band formed in 1994 in Helsinki. The founding members were Lauri Ylönen (lead vocals), Eero Heinonen (bass), Pauli Rantasalmi (guitar), and Jarno Lahti (drums). The lineup evolved significantly over the decades: Aki Hakala joined as drummer in 1999, and most recently, guitarist Emilia “Emppu” Suhonen replaced longtime member Pauli Rantasalmi in 2022. The band initially played funk rock before transitioning to a heavier alternative rock sound after signing to Playground Music in 2000.
The Rasmus achieved their greatest commercial success with the 2003 album Dead Letters and its lead single “In the Shadows”, which became a global hit, earning 6 gold and 2 platinum certifications and selling over 1 million copies. The album itself sold over 2 million copies worldwide and won multiple international awards, including MTV Europe Music Awards. Subsequent releases including Hide from the Sun (2005), Black Roses (2008), and Dark Matters (2017) solidified their status as one of Finland’s most successful rock exports.
To date, The Rasmus has released 11 studio albums and sold over 6 million albums worldwide, with an additional 350,000 sold in Finland. Beyond studio recordings, the band has maintained an active touring schedule across Europe and beyond. In 2022, they represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest with “Jezebel”, placing 21st. The band continues to record and perform, with their most recent album Weirdo released in September 2025.
