About Tokio Hotel
Biography / Discography
Tokio Hotel is a four-piece German pop rock band formed in 2001 in Magdeburg by identical twin brothers Bill Kaulitz (vocals) and Tom Kaulitz (guitar), alongside Georg Listing (bass) and Gustav Schäfer (drums). Originally performing as ‘Devilish’, the band renamed themselves Tokio Hotel after the German spelling of Tokyo and their constant touring lifestyle. Since formation, they have evolved from pop rock and alternative rock toward electropop and synth-pop, becoming one of Germany’s most commercially successful international acts.
Tokio Hotel released their debut album Schrei in 2005 on Universal Music Germany, which sold over 500,000 copies worldwide and spawned four top-five singles in Germany and Austria. Their 2007 releases—the second German album Zimmer 483 and first English-language album Scream—combined for over 2.5 million copies sold. The band achieved landmark international recognition by winning the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in September 2008, becoming the first German band ever to win at the MTV VMAs. They have accumulated over 110 awards across multiple international ceremonies and sold more than 10 million records worldwide.
The band’s discography spans seven studio albums: Schrei (2005), Zimmer 483 (2007), Scream (2007), Humanoid (2009), Kings of Suburbia (2014), Dream Machine (2017), and 2001 (2022), with eighth studio album Encore scheduled for October 2026.
