About Aqua
Biography / Discography
Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian eurodance group formed in Copenhagen in 1995. The band comprises vocalists René Dif and Lene Nyström, keyboardist Søren Rasted, and guitarist Claus Norreen. Originally performing as Joyspeed, they rose to international prominence with their 1997 debut album ‘Aquarium’ and its lead single ‘Barbie Girl,’ which became a global smash hit, topping the UK Singles Chart and reaching the Top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song’s suggestive lyrics sparked controversy and a trademark lawsuit by Mattel, which was dismissed in 2002 with the judge’s memorable ruling: ‘The parties are advised to chill.’
Following ‘Barbie Girl,’ Aqua achieved three consecutive UK number-one singles with ‘Doctor Jones’ and ‘Turn Back Time,’ establishing themselves as one of the decade’s most successful pop acts. Their second album ‘Aquarius’ (2000) continued their commercial success. After splitting in 2001, they reunited in 2007 and released their third studio album ‘Megalomania’ (2011), which featured the Top 10 hit ‘How R U Doin?’
The group disbanded in 2012, reunited in 2016, and finally disbanded in May 2026. Their cultural relevance was renewed when Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled ‘Barbie Girl’ for the 2023 Barbie film soundtrack, earning Aqua their first Grammy nominations. With an estimated 33 million albums and singles sold worldwide, Aqua became the most commercially successful Danish band ever, defining the eurodance sound of the 1990s.
