About Army of Lovers
Biography / Discography
Army of Lovers is a Swedish dance-pop and eurodance group formed in 1987 by Alexander Bard, Jean-Pierre Barda, and Camilla Henemark. The band achieved significant European success throughout the 1990s with a distinctive visual identity featuring camp music videos and flamboyant live performances. Their breakthrough single ‘Crucified’ (1991) became one of the decade’s biggest-selling European singles, charting for 31 weeks on the Eurochart and peaking at number 14. The group achieved total album sales of approximately seven million copies worldwide.
Army of Lovers recorded four studio albums between 1990 and 1994: Disco Extravaganza, Massive Luxury Overdose, The Gods of Earth and Heaven, and Glory Glamour and Gold. Major hits beyond ‘Crucified’ included ‘Obsession’ (charting 32 weeks), ‘Ride the Bullet’, and ‘Israelism’, which topped charts in Israel. Visual content directed by Fredrik Boklund and costumes by Camilla Thulin became hallmarks of the group’s aesthetic. Their reach remained primarily European, with the UK reaching Top 40 status.
The band disbanded in 1996 to focus on other projects, reformed briefly in 2001, and underwent further reunions from 2011 onwards, performing at Pride events and competing in Sweden’s Melodifestivalen 2013. New recordings emerged in subsequent years, including the album Sexodus released in 2023. Army of Lovers is available to book for festival appearances, private events, and live performances.
