About Chick Corea
Biography / Discography
Chick Corea (Armando Anthony Corea, 1941–2021) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader renowned as a pioneering figure in jazz fusion. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Corea became one of the foremost pianists of the post-John Coltrane era, ranking alongside McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Keith Jarrett. His signature compositions—including “Spain,” “500 Miles High,” “Windows,” and “La Fiesta”—became jazz standards.
Corea’s career spanned six decades of continuous innovation. In the late 1960s, he joined the Miles Davis band, participating in the emergence of jazz fusion through his work on albums like Filles de Kilimanjaro and Bitches Brew. In 1972, he co-founded Return to Forever, a landmark band combining Latin music, rock, and electronic elements that became essential to the jazz fusion movement. Beyond his group work, Corea pursued extensive duet collaborations with vibraphonist Gary Burton, pianist Herbie Hancock, banjoist Béla Fleck, and others, demonstrating his range and adaptability across musical contexts.
From the 1980s onward, Corea led the Chick Corea Elektric Band and the Akoustic Band, as well as the ensemble Origin, balancing electric and acoustic approaches throughout his career. He explored contemporary classical composition, creating piano concertos and chamber works. Corea won 29 Grammy Awards over his lifetime and was nominated 79 times, a testament to his prolific output and consistent artistic excellence.
