Mulatu Astatke is an Ethiopian composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist internationally recognized as the father of Ethio-jazz. Born in Jimma, Ethiopia, he studied music in London, New York and Boston, becoming one of the first African students at Berklee College of Music. His exposure to jazz, Latin music and classical composition shaped the groundbreaking fusion that would define his career.
In the late 1960s and 1970s, Mulatu developed a distinctive sound combining traditional Ethiopian scales with jazz harmonies, funk grooves and Afro-Latin rhythms. His recordings from that era became cult classics and later gained global rediscovery through compilations and film soundtracks, introducing Ethio-jazz to new generations worldwide.
A master of vibraphone, piano and percussion, Mulatu leads ensembles that merge improvisation with complex arrangements. His live performances balance hypnotic repetition with refined musicianship, creating an atmosphere both meditative and rhythmically powerful.
