About Kaoma
Biography / Discography
Kaoma was a French-Brazilian pop group formed in 1989 in Paris. Created by French producers Jean Karakos and Olivier Lorsac, the band became the international standard-bearer for lambada music, successfully introducing the Brazilian dance genre to European audiences. Led by vocalist Loalwa Braz with musicians from Martinique and Guadeloupe, Kaoma forged a vibrant blend of Latin rhythm, dance energy, and pop accessibility that resonated across the continent.
The group’s breakthrough came in summer 1989 with the single ‘Lambada’, which topped charts throughout Europe and reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming a global phenomenon. Their debut album Worldbeat (1989) achieved widespread commercial success, followed by Tribal Pursuit (1991). At the 1990 Lo Nuestro Awards, Kaoma received recognition with wins for Pop Group of the Year and New Pop Artist of the Year. The band released three studio albums before disbanding in 1999, solidifying their legacy as defining figures of late 1980s and 1990s dance and Latin music.
