About Level 42
Biography / Discography
Level 42 is an English jazz-funk band that formed on the Isle of Wight in 1979. The core lineup comprises Mark King on bass guitar and vocals, Phil Gould on drums, Boon Gould on guitar and saxophone, and Mike Lindup on keyboards. The band developed a distinctive fusion of jazz, funk, and synthesizer-driven pop that achieved international recognition throughout the 1980s.
The group achieved their greatest commercial success with ‘Lessons in Love,’ which reached number three on the UK singles chart and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. An earlier release, ‘Something About You,’ became their most successful US single, reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. These successes established Level 42 as major touring and recording artists during this period.
After sustained activity throughout the 1980s, the band’s commercial profile declined in the early 1990s following membership changes and musical evolution. Level 42 disbanded in 1994 but reformed in 2001, continuing to record and perform at live events.
