About Shakatak
Biography / Discography
Shakatak is an English jazz-funk band formed in London in 1980 by Bill Sharpe, Nigel Wright, Roger Odell and Keith Winter. The band’s name derives from Record Shack, a Soho record store, after their debut white-label single “Steppin’” caught the attention of Passion Records owner Les McCutcheon and Northern Soul DJ Kev Roberts. The group built its reputation on a smooth, danceable jazz-funk sound blending keyboards, guitar and vocals.
Shakatak’s 1981 single “Easier Said Than Done” spent seventeen weeks on the UK Singles Chart, and 1982’s “Night Birds” became a UK top ten hit. Their self-titled album reached number four in the UK and was certified gold, while 1984’s “Down on the Street” gave the band another top ten single and album. The band built a particularly strong following in Japan, releasing instrumental albums for that market including “Da Makani” (1988), and their 1992 album “Open Your Eyes” topped the US contemporary jazz chart.
The current lineup includes founding members Bill Sharpe, Roger Odell and Keith Winter alongside vocalist Jill Saward and bassist George Anderson, with the band continuing to record and tour internationally. Shakatak is available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
