About Chinaski
Biography / Discography
Chinaski is a Czech pop rock band from Prague, active since the 1980s and known as one of the country’s most commercially successful rock acts. Founded in 1987 by Pavel Grohman and Michal Novotny (who performs under the stage name Michal Malatny), the group originally recorded under an earlier name before adopting Chinaski in 1994, a reference to Henry Chinaski, the recurring protagonist of Charles Bukowski’s novels. The current lineup features Michal Malatny and Frantisek Taborsky on guitars and vocals, Jan Steinsdorfer on keyboards, Tomi Okres on bass, and Lukas Pavlik on drums.
The band built its commercial breakthrough around its second studio album in the late 1990s, and its 2002 release Original became one of the best-selling albums in the Czech Republic within its first two weeks of release. The 2005 album Music Bar achieved platinum certification within a day of release and sold more than 57,000 copies that year. Chinaski received the Andel Award from the Czech Academy of Popular Music in 2005 and again in 2007, and has repeatedly placed among the top acts in the long-running Cesky slavik popularity poll. The band underwent a significant lineup change in 2017 and has continued to release new material, including the album 11 in 2019. Chinaski is available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
