Danzel is the stage name of Johan Waem, a Belgian dance music producer and musician born on 9 November 1976 in Beveren. He is best known for his 2004 single “Pump It Up!”, a remix of a late-1990s track originally by Black & White Brothers, which became a major international success. The track reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, number 7 in Germany, and number 11 in France, establishing Danzel as a notable figure in the European dance music scene.
Danzel’s musical career began in late 2003 with his debut single “You Are All of That”, released via Ministry of Sound, which sampled Sylvester James’ “Do You Wanna Funk”. Following this initial release, “Pump It Up!” became his breakthrough moment, selling more than 500,000 copies worldwide. He continued releasing dance tracks throughout the 2000s, including “Put Your Hands Up in the Air!” (2005) and “My Arms Keep Missing You” (2006), a collaboration with Belgian DJ F.R.A.N.K.
Danzel released two studio albums during this period: “The Name of the Jam” (2004) and “Unlocked” (2008). His production style centers on house and eurodance, blending electronic elements with accessible dance club sensibility. His work typifies the early-2000s European dance music mainstream, characterized by remixes, covers, and high-energy club tracks designed for both radio play and dance floor performance.
