About East 17
Biography / Discography
East 17 are an English pop boy band formed in Walthamstow in 1991 by Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey, John Hendy, and Terry Coldwell. They are best known for their 1994 UK Christmas number-one single “Stay Another Day” and were among the UK’s most popular boy bands of the early-to-mid 1990s. Their musical style blended pop with hip-hop and R&B influences, distinguishing them from contemporaries like Take That with a grittier, more streetwise aesthetic. The band achieved 18 top-20 singles and four top-10 albums on the UK charts, with cumulative certified sales of 1.8 million albums and 3.4 million singles in the UK alone.
East 17 experienced significant commercial success during the 1990s. Their debut album Walthamstow (1992) reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, featuring notable hits like “House of Love” and “Deep”. The follow-up album Steam (1994) spawned their biggest single “Stay Another Day”, while Up All Night (1995) and subsequent releases maintained their chart presence. The group underwent multiple lineup changes throughout their career, with various formations reuniting for performances and tours, including a 2017 collaboration supporting B*Witched’s Australia and New Zealand tour.
