About Khruangbin
Biography / Discography
Khruangbin is an American instrumental trio from Houston, Texas, comprising guitarist Mark Speer, bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson. The band is known for their distinctive fusion of psychedelic rock, funk, and global music influences, blending Thai rock, Iranian pop, and dub with American soul and psychedelia. Their innovative sound earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist in 2024.
The band formed in 2004 when Speer and Johnson met while playing in a church gospel band. Ochoa joined in 2007, and the trio developed their signature bass-heavy, psychedelic sound in a barn in Burton, Texas. The band’s name, “khruangbin,” comes from the Thai word for “airplane,” reflecting Ochoa’s influences and symbolizing their globally-inspired music.
Khruangbin released their debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, in 2015 to critical acclaim, with The Guardian naming them “New Band of the Week.” Subsequent albums including Con Todo el Mundo (2018), Mordechai (2020), and Ali (2022), a collaboration with Malian guitarist Vieux Farkö Touré, solidified their reputation as innovative musicians. They released A La Sala in April 2024 and The Universe Smiles Upon You ii, a re-recorded version of their debut, in November 2025.
Music critics have described their sound as “extremely slippery, genrewise,” sometimes referred to as Thai funk or desert surf rock. Their influence has been so significant that they have spawned an entire subgenre known as “Khruangbin vibes.”
