Londonbeat are a British dance-pop band formed in London in 1988. The band’s current lineup features vocalists Jimmy Helms, Jimmy Chambers, and Charles Pierre, with former members including multi-instrumentalist William Henshall and George Chandler. Londonbeat rose to international prominence in the early 1990s as one of the era’s defining dance-pop acts.
The band’s breakthrough came with their 1988 debut album Speak, featuring tracks ‘There’s a Beat Going On’ and ‘9 A.M (The Comfort Zone).’ Their signature hit, ‘I’ve Been Thinking About You,’ from the 1990 album In the Blood, reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 1991. The follow-up single ‘A Better Love’ became a Top 20 Billboard hit. Subsequent releases included Harmony (1992), Londonbeat (1994), Back in the Hi-Life (2003), Gravity (2004), and the retrospective compilation 30 Years (2019), totaling six studio albums.
Beyond their primary work, band members have contributed as backing vocalists on recordings by major artists including Paul Young, Fine Young Cannibals, and Deacon Blue. George Chandler was also a founding member of the band Olympic Runners. In 1995, Londonbeat entered the UK Eurovision Song Contest heats but was not selected for the main competition. The band regrouped in 2003 with refreshed personnel and continues to tour and perform.
