About M People
Biography / Discography
M People, stylised as MPeople, are an English electronic dance music group formed in Manchester in 1990. The name derives from the first initial of founding member Mike Pickering. With lead vocalist Heather Small, keyboardists Paul Heard and Mike Pickering, and percussionist Shovell, they became one of the most successful dance acts of the 1990s, achieving 18 consecutive Top 10 hits in the UK and selling over 11 million records worldwide.
The band’s breakthrough came with their second album, Elegant Slumming (1993), which peaked at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and won the Mercury Music Prize. The album featured major hit singles including ‘Moving On Up’, ‘Don’t Look Any Further’, and ‘Renaissance’. Their subsequent album Bizarre Fruit (1994) cemented their commercial dominance, with the single ‘Search for the Hero’ becoming a Top 10 hit and generating significant radio and television exposure.
Following their peak in the mid-1990s, M People released the platinum-certified album Fresco (1997) and the compilation album The Best of M People (1998), both reaching the UK Top 3. The band entered an extended hiatus after 1999 but has reunited periodically for tours and festival appearances, including a 2013 Greatest Hits Tour marking 20 years since Elegant Slumming. In 2020, they released a comprehensive box set titled Renaissance, collecting their complete studio albums, remixes, and live performances.
