About Dodo Battaglia
Biography / Discography
Dodi Battaglia, born Donato Battaglia on June 1, 1951 in Bologna, Italy, is a guitarist and vocalist best known as a founding member of the progressive rock band Pooh. Joining Pooh in 1968 as guitarist and vocalist, he has been instrumental in shaping the band’s sound across five decades, co-authoring over 70 of the group’s compositions while establishing himself as one of Italy’s most respected guitarists.
Beyond his work with Pooh, Battaglia has pursued a prolific solo career beginning with the album Più in alto che c’è (1985), followed by the instrumental album D’assolo (2003). In 2015, he released the collaborative album Dov’è andata la musica with Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, demonstrating his versatility across genres. His compositional output exceeds 140 works across his solo and band catalogs. Battaglia has received multiple accolades, including recognition as Best European Guitarist by Die Zeitung (1981) and Stern magazine (1986), and was honored as Cavaliere della Repubblica in 1986. He holds honorary doctorates from conservatories in Matera and Bari.
A collector of vintage instruments, Battaglia owns approximately 50 guitars. His technical mastery and long-standing presence in Italian rock music have made him a defining figure in progressive rock from the 1970s through the 2010s, with Pooh celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016.
